                                                                                         abalone

                                      the muscle of metamorphosis

                                                     a vigorous tiny shell

in rainbow margins               eaten and eaten

                                                                      in the hatches

                                                                 blister pearls

to my grandmother - devout, flawed         simple grit
                                                      the button jar was opportunity

                                             nacreous rib for whirlgigs
                                                                                 all iridescence greasy
